The past meets the future

The Young Explorer

The Young Explorer

About the painting

This painting features a view from the mine manager’s building at the Independence Mine site in Hatcher Pass, Alaska. Built in 1939 for the mine manager, it was the one building  that featured the most modern amenities on the mining site, including hot water and refrigeration.

Today, this building is the one that’s the best preserved out of those that remain at the mine. It contains a lot of history and artifacts that are well worth exploring if you ever visit the area. It’s an interesting glimpse into what life was like back when the mine was active.

The view featured in the painting is from the deck outside the building itself, with a view of the surrounding mountains. A young explorer gazes out at the peaks and ruins around the mine. It’s a moment when the past meets the future, the old ruins meet the eyes of a new generation.
