This original gouache painting, titled ‘Young Explorer at Independence Mine,’ features a young explorer on the deck of the mine manager’s building in Hatcher Pass, Alaska. Built in 1939, the manager’s building at Independence Mine was the most modern structure of the site, featuring a number of modern conveniences. This artwork highlights the contrast between the historic site and the surrounding peaks, with the young explorer observing the mountains during a break in his adventures. The location offers a view of the distant Lynch cabin, another subject of my paintings. Today, the manager’s building is the best-preserved structure at Independence Mine, rich with history and artifacts. Explore this piece of Alaskan history through this unique perspective.
The painting is based on a photo taken during one of our many visits to the site.
