An ocean of purple and blue

Eklutna Iris Field

Eklutna Iris Field

About the painting

On the Eklutna Hayflats, there is a section that every summer produces a large amount of purple and blue Irises. When in full bloom, these fields are like an ocean of blue as far as the eye can see. Not only is it a beautiful scene when you take into account the flowers and the mountains in the background, it’s also a very serene setting. Despite the muted traffic noise in the background, it’s a peaceful and relaxing setting.

I’ve been wanting to paint this scene since I first started my gouache adventure. This painting is, in fact, a larger version of the same painting I did earlier in 6×8 inch size. It was one of my first attempts at a larger painting. I’ve tried to capture the green landscape that is so prevalent during the Alaskan summer, dotted with the blue/purple flowers throughout.
