Two Landmarks Standing Tall

Palmer Water Tower

Palmer Water Tower

About the painting

This painting is based on a photo taken by my wife during a cold winter day in January of 2024. In the middle of an extreme cold snap, this particular day featured a sense of hope for a warm future, with the clear skies and the sun appearing above the Chugach mountains to spread its rays across downtown Palmer.

It features the iconic Palmer water tower, unique in its kind in Alaska, and a recognizable part of the Palmer downtown, visible from all directions as you approach the town center. In the background, Matanuska Peak stands tall about the downtown area, the two standing together in a way.

Personally, I love the Palmer water tower. It has character and depending on where you stand in Palmer, the background will be different. In this painting, Matanuska Peak is the backdrop. Walk a few minutes north and Pioneer Peak is the backdrop. From a painter’s perspective, there are endless possibilities.

Painted over a period of several weeks in January, it is one of several other paintings featuring the water tower.
